I, along with some other students at ERAU are currently building a Chumpcar. Because of space, time, and frankly laziness it’s up to me to try and get this POS functioning.

So, some questions about a 1984 Nissan 300zx:

Is it safe to run a power steering rack without the power?

Why are there seemingly two coolant resivoirs?

Is the slanted radiator integral to its cooling power, or can it be mounted at a 90°?

Pictures can be added if necessary.

(Top) A picture of the exact Hawker 4000 that was on our ramp this morning.

I can’t answer any of the questions, but that’s a beautiful Hawker.

Too bad I only see those types if planes from the window of the cessna.

Pretty sure you can do that with the radiator but if you are mounting it sideways it won’t be ideal plus there is also the issue of having all the caps and fittings now sideways. I wouldn’t want to run a powered steering rack without the power though, I would either keep the rack as is or swap to a manual one. Also are you sure it’s two separate resovoirs or is one there for possible overflow?

Well, that’s the thing about the radiator is that it’s just a regular radiator, I guess. Thanks!

If you cut off and cap the lines, you won’t damage anything. I once took an autocross run in an NSX that had its power steering depowered. It was set up to be a track car, and the high steering effort required helped prevent the owner from making any stupid mistakes and spinning or crashing. It was too stiff for me on a small autocross course, but it might not be so bad on the track.

944's are converted to manual all the time. I would think it’s ok. I’d look at some of the threads on what that entails first though. Rebuilding a power steering pump is pretty easy, I did one on my 944 and it literally took more time to remove it and install it than it took to tear it down, clean it up and replace the seals. Less than an hour for the entire thing.

Rebuild kit for 84 300zx is like $8.

I’m perfectly fine with manual steering . especially on a track car. But good to know that it isn’t expensive to repair, especially if some of the less “gifted” drivers think it requires too much effort.

That 4000... I was an aero engineer in the Hawker Advanced Design Group when the company started hemorrhaging employees during The Downturn. It was super sad seeing all the cool future projects we had in the pipe get defunded. I bailed out and went to work for the government in 2009, but a bunch of my friends who stayed on said it only got more depressing as time wore on. Sad to see such an interesting company with an interesting product line tank.

As to your questions: You can run the rack without the pump, but make sure it has fluid in it for lubrication. Just cap the hoses or loop them together and you’ll be fine. Tilting the radiator isn’t a problem, just be sure that whatever you do with the cooling system, the pressure cap is at the highest point in the system. If not, it won’t vent properly or draw coolant back into the system from the reservoir.

It’s a Datsun :)

Should be safe to run sans power steering, as others have suggested, either cap the lines coming from the rack, or use a small piece of hose and a couple clamps to loop them together and prevent debris from entering the rack

I’m assuming it’s a non turbo car, but from my info, there’s only one reservoir/overflow bottle (#7 in the image below). Feel free to snap a photo of the underhood, my info on 22 year old cars isn't as great as I'd like it to be.

And you should be able to set the radiator vertical (90 degrees perpendicular to the road), pretty sure it was slanted back as a fitment issue in the front end.

Thanks. Did they change to Nissan in ‘85 then? Ours says Nissan on it Lol

My wonderful automotive sleuthing skills says that the second bottle is actually washer fluid.

Interesting. Now Textron owns Beechcraft I wonder what is going to happen to Hawker.

I heard the jets are just plain done, but I can’t prove that. If that’s true, I’m super bummed about the Premier and 4000 lines above all else (not that I had any problems with the 9-8-7 or 400 lines). The fact that we designed, built, and certified two different carbon fiber jets years before Boeing designed the 787 is awesome on it’s own. The machines that “spun” the carbon fuselages were engineering marvels!

They really were something cool. Hopefully Cessna uses the aquired technology well.

It was 79-80 they went back to Nissan. My 79 210 had a Datsun emblem on the left side of the trunk-and Nissan on the right.
